maxresdefault.jpg Not Found: Why the HD Thumbnail Is Missing
You built the URL correctly and still got an error or a gray square. That is normal for some videos, and it is not something you did wrong.
What is happening
The 1280×720 thumbnail, called maxresdefault, is only generated when the video was uploaded in HD or when the thumbnail image itself is large enough. If it was never created, requesting it returns an error or a tiny placeholder. The smaller sizes are generated for every video, so those URLs always work.
Which videos are affected
- Older uploads from before HD was common.
- Videos uploaded in standard definition.
- Some very new videos, where the render is not ready yet. Try again later.
What to do
- Fall back to
sddefault.jpg(640×480), thenhqdefault.jpg(480×360). - Remember that those two include black bars. Crop them if you need a clean 16:9 image.
- Use a tool that checks for you. The YouTube thumbnail size checker lists only sizes that exist, with real resolutions.
For developers
Handle the missing file with a fallback to hqdefault.jpg, which exists for every video.

A quick way to tell what is happening
Open the 1280×720 and 480×360 addresses for the same video in two tabs. If only the second loads, the HD file is missing. If neither loads, check the ID, the video's visibility and whether it has been removed. The size checker on the YouTube thumbnail size page does this test for you.
How to confirm it is the HD file that is missing
Open hqdefault.jpg for the same video ID. If that one loads and maxresdefault does not, the video simply has no HD render. If neither loads, the ID is wrong or the video is private or removed.
Why waiting sometimes works
For a video that was published a few minutes ago, the larger renders can appear after the smaller ones. If the video is brand new, try again after a short while before you conclude that it will never have an HD thumbnail.
Frequently asked questions
Why does maxresdefault.jpg give a 404?
The 1280×720 file was never generated for that video. This is common for older uploads and for standard-definition videos.
Is it a problem with my link?
Usually not. If hqdefault.jpg for the same ID loads, the link is fine and only the HD file is missing.
Can I force YouTube to create the HD thumbnail?
Not from the outside. The owner of the video can upload a larger custom thumbnail.
What should I use instead?
sddefault.jpg at 640×480, then hqdefault.jpg at 480×360.
Why do some sites show a gray image?
Some sites serve a small placeholder under the HD name. ThumbGrab avoids it by checking the real resolution.
