How to download a YouTube thumbnail
ThumbGrab reads the public thumbnail set that YouTube generated for the video and hands you every size as a direct download with a clean filename — no popups, no redirect mazes, no right-click gymnastics. The resolution of each image is stated next to it, and when a video was uploaded in standard definition the missing full-HD file is labeled as missing instead of being faked with a gray placeholder, which is what most thumbnail sites quietly serve you.
- Copy the video link from YouTube (or just its ID).
- Paste it above and press Get thumbnails.
- Download any size — or copy its direct image URL for your own use.
Every YouTube thumbnail size, explained
YouTube stores several renders of each thumbnail, and which ones exist depends on how the video was uploaded. Full HD exists only for HD uploads, while the small sizes exist for every video ever published. For creators uploading thumbnails, the official recommendation is 1280×720, 16:9 ratio, minimum 640 pixels wide, maximum 2 MB, in JPG, PNG or GIF.
| File | Resolution | Exists for | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| maxresdefault | 1280×720 (16:9) | HD uploads only | Blogs, articles, printing, analysis |
| sddefault | 640×480 (4:3) | Almost all videos | General use, older videos |
| hqdefault | 480×360 (4:3) | Every video | Quick previews, lists |
| mqdefault | 320×180 (16:9) | Every video | Compact layouts |
| default | 120×90 (4:3) | Every video | Tiny fallbacks |
The 4:3 sizes include the letterbox bars YouTube baked into old renders — that is how YouTube stores them, not a bug in the download.
Why ThumbGrab feels different
No gray placeholders
When a video has no full-HD thumbnail, most sites still show a box that downloads as a tiny gray image. ThumbGrab checks what really exists and says so on the card, so you never save a 120-pixel placeholder by accident.
Everything at once
All available sizes load in a single pass with their resolutions and file sizes, each with a Download button and a Copy URL option. Comparing sizes to pick the right one for your blog, deck or study takes seconds, not five separate visits.
Clean filenames
Downloads arrive named after the video and the size — «Video title_1280x720.jpg» — instead of a meaningless «maxresdefault.jpg» lost in your Downloads folder next to ten identical ones.
Nothing opens by itself
Results appear only when you ask for them, and everything that appears has a visible way to close it. The results panel stays closed once you close it, and the floating banner at the bottom has its own close button too.
What people use it for
Bloggers & journalists
Writers illustrate articles about a video with its actual thumbnail instead of screenshots, and researchers study which images popular channels choose — a thumbnail is often the most A/B-tested image on the internet.
Creators studying the craft
Aspiring YouTubers build swipe files of thumbnails from their niche to study composition, faces and text placement at full resolution. Saving the biggest size is the whole point — the details are in the 1280×720 file.
Archiving your own channel
Creators back up the thumbnail set of their own uploads before a rebrand or a channel migration. Your own thumbnails are yours to save — the safest use case there is.
Presentations & education
Teachers and speakers reference videos in decks without embedding them live, and students cite the visual of a source properly instead of photographing the screen with a phone.
Frequently asked questions
Is ThumbGrab free, and do I need an account?
It is completely free and unlimited, and there is no account, email or sign-up. Paste a YouTube link and every available thumbnail size appears in seconds.
How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?
Copy the video link, paste it into the box above and press Get thumbnails. Every size YouTube generated for that video is listed with its resolution, and each one downloads with a clean, descriptive filename.
What thumbnail sizes can I download?
Up to five per video: full HD 1280×720 (maxresdefault), 640×480 (sddefault), 480×360 (hqdefault), 320×180 (mqdefault) and 120×90 (default). YouTube's recommended size for creators is 1280×720 with a 16:9 ratio, a minimum width of 640 pixels and a 2 MB file limit.
Why is the full-resolution thumbnail missing?
YouTube only generates the 1280×720 maxresdefault image for videos uploaded in high definition. For older or low-resolution uploads, that file simply does not exist (the server returns a 404), so the largest real size is 640×480. ThumbGrab labels this honestly instead of serving a gray placeholder.
Is the YouTube thumbnail 1920×1080?
No. YouTube's recommended thumbnail size is 1280×720 (16:9). Images of 1920×1080 are accepted on upload if they stay under 2 MB, but they are scaled down to the same display size, so there is no quality advantage in uploading them.
Can I download thumbnails from Shorts?
Yes. Shorts use the exact same thumbnail storage as normal videos, so pasting a shorts YouTube link works identically and returns the same set of sizes.
Can I use YouTube thumbnails on my own website or blog?
Thumbnails are part of the creator's content and protected like any other image. Using someone else's thumbnail as an illustration on your site generally requires permission or a license; linking back to the video or using your own thumbnails is always safe.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The page is fully responsive and light, so it works on phones and tablets as comfortably as on desktop, with no app to install.
Do you store the links I paste?
No. Links are resolved on the fly and nothing is stored on our side. The only thing kept on your device is your own preference about the results panel staying closed, and clearing your browser data wipes it.
Can I download a channel banner or avatar?
Not with this tool. ThumbGrab is built for video thumbnails, which use a stable public storage; channel banners and avatars are served differently and change often, so they are out of scope here.
